Self-Defense & Personal Safety Tools for Mothers, Daughters, Women and Teenage Girls: Are You Equipped?

Posted on 08.17.13.

The school year underway, or almost.  Bullying, abduction, and acts of violence are dominating the media. Consider this a wake-up call and a suggestion — to take action.

Did you know that:

  • 1 in 20 young women attending college will be the victims of a violent attack
  • 1 in 6 females will be sexually attacked in their lifetime
  • 95% of all violent struggles end up with one or both people on the ground

What if you, your daughter, sister, mother, aunt, mother in law, or soul sister becomes one of these statistics?

First, save the date:  Next Sunday, August 25th, from 2 – 4:30 pm.  Now read on…

Years ago I took a self-defense course with my then-mother-in-law.  I thought I was pretty street savvy, having lived in major cities including New York, San Francisco, DC, London, Paris, Shanghai and now Atlanta, but I can tell you, it sure opened my eyes. Little did I realize how much I was in the dark.  So now I have a daughter who is 17 years old. She goes off to college in a year’s time…  Need I say more? Yes, actually I think I should.

So I’ve decided to take action so that my daughter can get the basics of empowerment and survival, but I also want to help others do this, too.  My friends at Imperatori Karate, where my son took karate and where I’d taken that workshop years ago (… and as I write this, I’m asking myself why I didn’t also enroll my daughter in karate way back then? ) introduced me to Steve and Peggy Brown of American Marital Arts, self-defense professionals who have presented jiu-jitsu-based women’s self-defense programs since 1989 (thanks, Joey Imperatori), which brings me to the present.

Next Sunday, August 25th, from 2 – 4:30pm, I’m hosting a self-defense and personal safety tools workshop for women and teenage girls (12 – 92 year olds are welcome).  Click here for full details or go to the Upcoming page on this website.

Tammy Stokes, founder of West Coast Workout is offering us the use of her Buckhead studio on West Paces Ferry Road, next to Coast and across from the St. Regis Hotel. Tammy and I are both moms of daughters, and ironically, we both took the exact same self-defense course all those years ago! (and btw, neither of us are receiving financial compensation for this. We are just glad to make this happen.)

The $65 per person cost ($55 for the family member who joins you) will pay for Steve and Peggy’s time, knowledge and considerable expertise.  Because the Browns care as much about  empowering women as we do, they have agreed to donate $10 for every person who joins us to GCAPP, Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Power and Potential. Formerly known as Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention, this is the organization that Jane Fonda created years ago and which has done SO much for Georgia’s adolescent girls and their families.

I hope you will invest 2 1/2 hours of your time on Sunday afternoon. Equip yourself and a loved one with the knowledge and how-to’s to prevent life-threatening situations and practice exactly what to do when a person bigger than you threatens or, worse, attacks you.

Space is limited to 20 people and there will be plenty of one-to-one instruction from Steve and his team as we practice the self-defense techniques demonstrated.

To register, please contact Peggy Brown of American Martial Arts at or call 404.245.2210

If you don’t live here or can’t attend, I encourage you to locate a self-defense program that works for you. This may be one of the most important things you can do for yourself as well as someone you care about.

* With enough interest, I may try to organize a repeat event.  But now, as school starts, is the time to sign up.   I hope you’ll take advantage of the opportunity.
