We All Say We Need to Address Eduxation… My Endorsement: Cynthia Briscoe Brown

Posted on 11.01.13.

Those of you that know me know that politics are not my normal area of activity, but education and “the next generation” certainly is.

Since we have the opportunity to vote for four candidates for the Atlanta Board of Education, one from our district and three at-large, I wanted to share this with you.

I have known Cynthia Briscoe Brown, one of the candidates for the 2 at-large positions for about 15 years. A lawyer by training, she has the knowledge, intelligence, the objectivity and and determination to make a difference.
I hope you will vote for her and take into consideration the endorsement the other two candidates.

Please also read the email below from a long time educator and friend who I have known for about 15 years. I highly respect her judgement. So I wanted to share her thoughts on these Board of Education races,
The bottom line is that she suggests these:
– Nancy Meister (District 4)
– Cynthia Briscoe Brown (at-large)
– Courtney English (at-large)

Thank you,

Subject: Candidates for Atlanta Board of Education

Several friends have asked about the up-coming election for the Atlanta Board of Education, so I am sharing this information with you.

On November 5 we will be asked to vote for four positions on the Atlanta Board of Education (ABE). Since this comes around only every four years, it is easy to forget the way the board is set up. The city is divided into six districts, and each district has one representative. (I happen to be in District 4 which is currently represented by Nancy Meister.)

In addition, the ABE has three At Large Districts which are composed as follows:

Districts 1 & 2 are represented by At- Large District 7

Districts 3 & 4 are represented by At -Large District 8

Districts 5 & 6 are represented by At-Large District 9

Thus, the board member from At-Large District 7 is elected city-wide but must reside in either District 1 or District 2. We will be asked to vote for At-Large Districts 7, 8, and 9 in addition to our local district member.

In case you are interested, I have chosen the following candidates:

District 4: Nancy Meister (I first knew Nancy when I taught her sons at Sutton many years ago and knew her then as a supportive, passionate parent who was willing to roll up her sleeves and make a difference at Sutton.)

At-Large District 7: Courtney English

At-Large District 8: Cynthia Briscoe-Brown (I have known Cynthia for at least 20 years. She has been a tireless worker and advocate for our schools in Districts 3 & 4 and has served at all levels of parent support groups. Additionally, she has worked for all our APS districts in her work with APPLE Corps. Her children have gone all the way through APS schools (Brandon, Sutton, North Atlanta) and she knows things inside and out! Finally, I have known her as a faithful, committed member at FPC Atlanta.

At-Large District 9: This one is not as clear for me, and I would especially appreciate feedback on this one. I have two recommendations from respected sources. If I were voting today, I would vote for Ed Johnson. A second choice is Jason Esteves.
